In a very timely reminder of the impact of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme, some 6.7 million young people have participated to date.
Henry is working towards his Duke of Edinburgh Bronze award along with other year 10 students who have opted to take part and this is being run by Swavesey Village College.

The litter picking is to fulfil the ‘volunteering’ element and in addition there is also a physical challenge (he is playing football), and a challenge to learn a new skill (he researched and built his own PC) in addition to participating in an expedition where they have to navigate themselves from one point to another. Unfortunately the expedition was cancelled last summer (due to Covid) so they are hoping they can complete it at some point soon.
One thing that surprised Henry was how old the litter was that he was picking out of the ditches – chocolate wrappers for bars that have since had a name change and cans of fizzy drink that were discontinued in the 1990s! It really is something that litterbugs need to understand – that what they are tossing into the environment could be there for 10s if not 100s of years.
Well done Henry. Much appreciated.
