Meet your warden

Rachael Mortimer

It is a great pleasure to report that a Community Warden has been recruited by Age UK Cambridgeshire and Peterborough to cover the villages of Fen Drayton, Fenstanton and Lolworth.

My name is Rachael Mortimer and I have recently joined Age UK Cambridgeshire and Peterborough as the Community Warden. I want to take this opportunity to introduce myself as you will be seeing me within the local community daily and to share an insight into my career background. Straight from school, I trained to work in the catering industry (can still make a nice Victoria sponge!) but felt this was not the industry for me and so I then embarked on a career in the care profession and have extensive experience, over the past 30 years of working with children and older adults in a variety of environments, including within the community. This has been where my passion remains, and I am now looking forward to this next challenge and to hearing from you and being that support to enable you to continue living at home safely and independently.

In my spare time, I enjoy walking our rescue greyhound Stan, country walks, reading, listening to music, especially Paul Weller and being part of the riverport WI in St Ives.

This is the culmination of a project between the three Parish Councils and Age UK supported by Cambridge County Council’s Innovate and Cultivate Fund and South Cambs District Council.

If you would like to learn more about the scheme or receive support from the warden, please call Rachael directly on 07971951412 or email wardens@ageukcap.org.uk

All enquiries will be kept confidential by Age UK Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.

Age UK Help poster

Age UK CAP have been delivering community warden schemes for over 26 years and this local scheme has now been in place since January 2021. The role of the community warden is to assist people over the age of 60 to remain living at home by offering a daily welfare phone call along with practical tasks such as support to attend medical appointments, making a drink or light lunch, prescriptions, making phone calls on your behalf, access to other relevant services and small items of shopping.

There is a 2-week free trial and then afterwards there is a small weekly fee. Here are couple of quotes from those on the scheme:

  • “I like our chats; they wake me up!”
  • “You’re very kind and thoughtful”
