An ambitious plan to ‘double the trees in Fenstanton’ is taking shape.
We are not alone as councils throughout Cambridgeshire are signing up to the ‘Double Nature Campaign’.
We are currently counting trees across the Parish. To date we have identified 9,100 trees north of the old A14. When completed this will give us our planting target; in the estimated order of some 50,000 trees!
It sounds improbable, but there are over 2,500 acres in Fenstanton.
– Planting 1 acre of woodland would need about 2,000 trees.
– Planting 25 acres with trees is less than 1% of the parish.
We would like to work with local landowners/stakeholders/householders to explore additional planting opportunities.
- Our first local landowner has show a keen interest in planting an area of approximately 1.5 to 2 acres.
- We would like to encourage and support each householder to double the number of trees in your garden….this would make a HUGE difference.
Later this year we will carry out a detailed condition survey of trees and green spaces, with a view to producing a comprehensive maintenance and management programme. We will be using GPS location and mapping software to help manage the green environment in the village. We will identify potentially suitable community spaces for planting.
We are keen to involve individuals and groups from across Fenstanton. We will need help with:
- Surveying
- Identifying planting sites and areas
- Planting
- On-going care and maintenance
